This project is part of a book I filled with experiments to create handmade wine labels.
Inspiration:
Inspired by Oriol Pascual in pairing with Jack Spade, they designed a limited edition of just 99 bottles, each label was hand painted with water colours. Furthering my inspiration I looked at painting with wine to achieve a original hand made effect.
Process:
1. I first had to reduce my red wine and get it to the right consistency to paint with, and get the right colour concentrate. This failed the first time reducing the wine to a burnt layer on my pan.
2. Once the consistency of the wine paint was to my liking I tested out a couple of different ways of drawing the numbers and trying to keep it consistent over the course of different labels. Once the labels had dried the colours had slightly faded, so I had to go over the label a couple of times before I got the required effect.
3. Once I had successfully “painted”, I remade the labels on their final paper and reduced the wine a little bit more to give it a darker look. I then tore the sides of the paper to give it a more hand made farm look. Giving the buyer the impression that the vintner sat down and created the labels one by one, using his glass of wine to paint the labels.
4. Finally I photographed the work and placed it in Photoshop to create a mock-up of the label on a wine bottle.
Discoveries:
Painting with wine turned out to be a lot harder than it seemed, as when it was reduced it quickly became sticky and dry. I would like to keep working on this style of work and see if I could actually create a wine paint font.
