How and why has handmade design techniques become popular and affected the culture of contemporary digital graphic design?
Abstract
This dissertation is about the revival of the handmade in a digital age. Over the ages man has always used their hands to create. In the beginning of the digital revolution, when the computer was launched it created an automatic rebellion against handmade leaving handmade design to be forgotten, on a back shelf collecting dust. This forms the question of why has handmade now resurfaced and what is its effect on graphic design today? Handmade design has become prominent in contemporary graphic design. Over the last ten years the re-introduction of handmade design techniques has given designers the possibility to experiment with pre-digital techniques. This paper explores the reasons for its resurgence and investigates the importance of collaboration between designers using different design methods. The research moves forward into forming a diagrammatical representation of a collaboration model between graphic designer processes and their different mediums –handmade and digital –.
