This project is part of a book I filled with experiments of digital vs non-digital designs.
Inspiration:
Evelin Kazikov is the main inspiration for this work. Trying out her style of CMYK cross stitch opened a whole new path for further development and ideas for my major project. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Process:
1. I first composed a pattern to imitate the halftone dot of a CMYK printer. Using the standard angles of C-105 degrees, M-75 degrees, Y-90 degrees, K-45 degrees. I then changed the dots to cross stitch X’s.
2. I then created a pattern to show the printing process to create black, overlapping the CMYK and leaving space to see the overlapping of the process.
3. Once printed I was able to stitch over the layout and create a three dimensional hand print.
4. I proceeded by creating more layouts with different patterns and finalized the CMYK letter pattern using helvetica as my type as it is fat enough to show all the spacings of the cross stitch halftone pattern.
Discoveries:
This was a great project to create. It has inspired me a lot and has given me amazing results. I wish to explore more of this in further development. I would like to see if I will be able to use Kazikov’s idea and develop it further into something truly unique to me. As this is truly all of her idea. I really like the fact that this was her end project for her MA, this could be a basic building block for my major project. It is very time consuming, so time management is key to complete all these works. Also they are very large so trying different pattern formats would be the next step into this project.
I am excited to see where this will lead me.
