This project is part of a book I filled with experiments to commemorate botanical geometry.
Process:
1.While working on my Christmas cards, I was inspired to create a vector piece of basic geometric shapes. Inspired by flat design to create different coloured floral design that grows from the letters.
2. Using the concept of basic shapes I began by creating pedal like shapes for the flower (top right). From there I created multiple different flowers and started connecting them to the different letters.
3. Creating the different flowers that would fit well together was the hardest part, and took the longest to achieve.
4. In the end showing my work, I was advised to try out different colours for the design since it had a very 60s look to it. Personally I still find the original the best one.
Discoveries
While working on this project I realized that my Illustrator skills are far better than I thought. Years ago I used to work in the process of researching differ- ent designs and tracing forms that I liked from different designs like pedals or leaves with Image Trace function in Illustrator. Using this gave me less control over the shapes and usually turned into too many points or strange shapes. For this project I was set on creating every single element without the influ- ence of other artists and created from my own memory and inspiration that I have gathered over the years.
I was very satisfied with the end result as experimenting with Illustrator gave me better control over my creation. Also working from my own inspiration and not researching what other artists have done gave me the freedom to really try my own thing. Since arriving in England I have heard multiple times that my style is very 60s, with basic shapes yet organic, this is true as I have always been inspired by this work and the work that lead to this style Art Nouveau. I would like to create more images like this and maybe start by sketching out designs by hand first before working on a project in Illustrator.
